I've just spoken to a Japan consulate in the States regarding "kinship visas" for first-degree relatives (parents and children) of foreign residents of Japan: You can visit if your parent or child living in Japan if it says "long-term resident" (定住者) on their residence card. The visit can be social (ie, just to see them; it does not have to be for any medical or emergency reason). And, you can travel to other parts of Japan during your visit. I will post more details on this coming Monday's InsideKyoto page.

Hi! My mom is a japanese citizen and lives in Japan. I live in the US. I can visit her now? I am not a minor child, I am an adult. I no longer have dual citizenship.

I believe you can. Please check with the nearest embassy or consulate. I am going to try to get more details on the exact policy in the near future. I will post it all on InsideKyoto and put details here as well. Thanks!

First-degree relatives of foreign residents of Japan can now visit Japan. You will have to contact your nearest Japan embassy or consulate. They will walk you through the process. Your son will have to provide some paperwork on his end.
